Essential Oil Safety Tips

Author: admin

Essential Oils are wonderful gifts from nature that have extremely beneficial properties when used correctly. Follow the safety tips below to ensure that you always have a positive, healthy experience with your essential oils.

  • Carriers oils are safe to apply directly to the skin and are used to dilute other essential oils, which can be harmful if applied directly. Examples of carriers oils are grapeseed, sweet almond, flaxseed and sesame.
  • Always use extra carrier oils when a essential oils blend will be used near sensitive parts of the body.
  • It is generally not a good idea to consume alcohol when using essential oils. A glass of wine is ok, but don’t over do it.
  • Essential oils have strong vapors that can irritate the eyes. If irritation occurs simply flush your eyes with cool water or apply one drop of sweet almond oil.
  • If you are pregnant and plan to use essential oils, stick to small quantities of the following oils to ensure safety: Cardamom, coriander, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, lime, mandarin, melissa, neroli, palmarosa, petitgrain, spearmint and ylang-ylang.
  • Don’t use essential oils while taking medication as the essential oils can interfere with your medicine.
  • Always store essential oils away from pets and children.
  • Essential oils will evaporate and deteriorate if the bottles aren’t kept closed tightly.
  • Keep your oils stored in brown, glass bottles as light exposure causes essential oils to break down rapidly.
  • These oils can be irritating to the skin so take precaution when using them: Cinnamon, clove, grapefruit, lemon, lemongrass, lime, mandarin, melissa, orange, black pepper, peppermint and spearmint.
  • Many essential oils will remove the finish if spilled on furniture.
